The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game on Sunday. Buffalo got to this point with a 17-3 win over the Baltimore Ravens, and the Chiefs are coming off of a 22-17 win against the Cleveland Browns last week.
The Bills and Chiefs met during Week 6 of the regular season, with Kansas City winning 26-17 in Buffalo as a 5.5 point favorite. The Chiefs outgained the Bills 446 to 206 in that game. Patrick Mahomes completed 21 of 26 passes for 225 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in that victory, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 161 yards on 26 carries. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen struggled in the first meeting completing 14 of 27 passes for 122 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. Allen also led the Bills in rushing yards for the game, gaining 42 yards on eight carries.
Bills return to AFC championship for the first time since 1994The Buffalo Bills won the AFC East this season and finished with a 13-3 record. The Bills defeated the Colts in the first round of the playoffs with a 27-24 win as a 6.5 point favorite. Last week as a 2.5-point favorite, Buffalo defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-3. The Bills were outgained by Baltimore 340 to 220 in total yardage, but the Ravens also committed the game's only turnover on a Lamar Jackson interception. Buffalo also managed to end one of its two red-zone trips with a touchdown, while their defense held Baltimore to zero touchdowns out of three red-zone trips. The Bills only rushed for 32 yards on 16 attempts for the game, but quarterback Josh Allen was able to supply enough offense for the win. Allen completed 23 of 37 passes with one touchdown completed to Stefon Diggs. Diggs finished the game with eight catches for 106 yards.
Josh Allen completed 69.2% of his passes for 4,544 yards with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 16 regular-season games. Allen also ran for 421 yards with two touchdowns. Diggs led the team with 127 receptions and 1,535 yards, and eight touchdowns, followed by Cole Beasley with 82 catches and 967 yards with four touchdowns.
Buffalo was second in both total offense during the regular season with 396.4 yards per game, scoring with 31.3 ppg, and third with 288.8 passing yards per game. Defensively Buffalo was 14th allowing 352.5 total yards and 16th giving up 23.4 ppg.
Mahomes status still in questionThe Kansas City Chiefs finished the regular season with a 14-2 record to grab the top seed in the AFC playoffs. After having a bye in the first round of the playoffs, the Chiefs defeated the Cleveland Browns 22-17 as a 10-point favorite. The Chiefs outgained the Browns 438 to 308 total yardage for the win. Against Cleveland, 315 of Kansa City's yards came from the air led by Patrick Mahomes, who completed 21 of 30 passes for 255 yards with one touchdown. Mahomes was knocked out of the game late in the second half with a concussion and replaced by veteran backup Chad Henne. Although Henne did throw one interception, he made two crucial plays to seal the win. Henne rushed for 13 yards on a 3r d& 14 play with two minutes left in the game and then completed a five-yard pass on 4th &1 from the Cheifs 48 yard line to end the game. Henne finished the game 6 of 8 passing for 66 yards and with two rushes for 12 yards. The Chiefs rushing attack was led by Darrel Williams, who ran for 78 yards on 13 carries. Clyde Edwards-Healaire, who led the Chiefs in rushing during the season, was sidelined against Cleveland due to a high ankle sprain and is questionable for Sunday. Patrick Mahomes is also questionable with a concussion and toe injury. If Mahomes cannot play, then Chad Henne will get the start.
Mahomes led the Chiefs with 4,740 yards, 66.3% completions, and 38 TD to 6 INTs in 15 games during the regular season. Henne made one start and three appearances this regular season, completing 73.7% of his passes for 248 yards with two touchdowns. Edwards-Helaire rushed for 803 yards on 181 carries for 4.4 yards per carry this season, followed by Le'Veon Bell, who ran for 254 yards on 63 carries for 4.0 yards per attempt. If Edwards-Helaire and Bell are unable to go, Darrel Williams should lead the way again. During the regular season, Williams rushed for 169 yards on 39 attempts.
Travis Kelce and Tryeeek Hill are the leading threats in the passing game. Kelce caught 105 passes for 1416 yards and 11 TDs during the regular season, and Hill caught 87 passes for 1,276 yards and 15 Tds. Hill and Kelce both caught eight passes last week against Cleveland, with Hill picked up 110 yards, and Kelce finished with 109 yards and a touchdown.
The Chiefs had the number one offense during the season, averaging 415.8 total yards per game and 303.4 passing yards. Kasssnas City was sixth in scoring, averaging 29.6 ppg. The Chiefs were 10th in scoring defense, holding opponents to 22.6 ppg and 16th, allowing 358.3 yards per contest.
