The A’s host the Mariners in the first game of an AL West series with first pitch scheduled at 9:40. The Mariners are sinking as of late, as they have lost three in a row and five of their last six games. The team is 10 games under .500 and in fourth place in the AL West 13 games out of first place. The lineup for Seattle has really struggled in the last few games and on the season, they only rank 26th in the Majors in runs scored. The A’s had lost two in a row before a shutout win in their last game. They club is tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the fewest wins in baseball and in the basement of the AL West 19 games out of first place. Oakland ranks last in the Majors in team batting average, second to last in runs scored, and 24th in team ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 940pm EST.
The DroughtThe Mariners have been shut out in their last two games and they have not scored a run in the last 22 innings. In their last game they lost to the L.A. Angels 4-0 where they only had two hits and struck out eight times. Ty France leads the club in batting average (.314) and RBI (44) and while hitless in the last two games he has five RBI over the last six games. Eugenio Suarez leads the club with 12 HR but is only batting .227 and only has one HR over his last 14 games. On the season Seattle is 14-21 on the road but they have won their last six games facing the A’s in Oakland.

Marco Gonzalez (3-7 3.41 ERA 1.31 WHIP) takes the hill for the Mariners in this series opener and in his last start was pretty solid giving up one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings but got no run support in a 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The M’s have lost his last four starts where he did not give up more than three runs in any of them and only got six runs of support. The only start this season where Gonzalez gave up more than three runs was the last time the Mariners won with him starting where he was at home and gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings but the lineup helped him out in a 7-6 win over the A’s.
Avoiding the BroomThe A’s avoided being swept in their last series beating the Kansas City Royals 4-0 in the finale. The team had only scored one run in losing the first two games of the series. In the 4-0 win the team had nine hits and Seth Brown had a solo HR and Sean Murphy had a 3-run shot.
You can see how much the Oakland lineup has struggled this season, as out of the everyday players Tony Kemp leads the team and he is only batting .226. Brown leads the team with nine HR and 32 RBI, is batting .210 on the season, and he had not had a HR or RBI in five straight games before the solo HR in the last game. On the season Oakland has, by far, the worst home record (8-25) in baseball.
James Kaprielian (0-4 6.31 ERA 1.50 WHIP) gets the call for Game 1 of this series and he was roughed up in his last start giving up six runs on seven hits in only 3 2/3 innings in a 10-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox. The A’s have lost his last three starts where he gave up 11 runs in 14 innings. Kaprielian did not pitch well in his lone start against the Mariners this season on May 25th in Seattle giving up five runs in five innings but the lineup had his back in a 7-5 Oakland win.
The Oakland A's are:
- 1-5 in their last 6 vs. a team with a losing record
