After a good start, South Alabama has hit the skids and they look to get back on track facing an Arkansas State team that has lost six in a row.

After beating Central Arkansas in their season opener Arkansas State has lost their six games since. They did play a close game in their last one but are still the only team in the Sun Belt that is without a conference win. While the Red Wolves have one of the best passing attacks in the nation they have the third-worst rushing offense and rank dead last on defense giving up an average of 44 ppg.

After winning their first three games of the season South Alabama has lost three of their last four games. They gave up 41 points in their last game and are only 1-3 in Sun Belt play. Like the Red Wolves, the Jaguars are also led by their passing offense.

Bad Defense Shows

While the Red Wolves did force two turnovers in their last game, they gave up 546 total yards in a 28-27 loss to Louisiana. They gave up a whopping 424 rushing yards and while they did have 413 total yards and 300 passing yards they were shut out in the fourth quarter. The Red Wolves did cover the big spread as 17-point road underdogs after failing to cover in their previous two games.

Layne Hatcher (1,106 yards 12 TD 3 INT) got the start in the last game and was pretty solid with 300 passing yards with three TD and no picks and he will likely start in this game. The Red Wolves have three WRs that have at least 424 yards and Te'Vailance Hunt and Corey Rucker have combined for 1,074 receiving yards and 12 TD. The team does not run the ball much and Lincoln Pare is the leading rusher with 198 yards but he has rushed for at least 52 yards in two of the last three games. South Alabama does have a pretty good pass defense ranking 21st in the nation and you can be sure that unit will be tested in this game.

The Wrong Side of 41

After a 41-14 home win over Georgia Southern, South Alabama was on the road in their last game and lost to UL Monroe 41-31. The team gave up 555 total yards (369 passing yards 186 rushing yards), committed three turnovers, and only rushed for 89 yards. The Jaguars are at home facing Arkansas State and in the last five meetings between the teams the home team has covered the spread four times

Senior Jake Bentley (1,825 yards 11 TD 4 INT) leads South Alabama and while he passed for 320 yards in the last game and had four TD he was picked twice and sacked four times. The main guy the Red Wolves defense may have to worry about is WR Jalen Tolbert (873 yards 4 TD), who has totaled 329 receiving yards and three TDs over the last two games. Three players for the Jaguars have at least 211 rushing yards led by Terrion Avery (286 yards) but none of them are averaging over 3.9 yards per carry. That may change in this game facing an Arkansas State run D that ranks dead last in the nation.
