The Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers will meet for the first of a three-game series at Globe Life Field on Monday night. Young right-hander Spenser Watkins is on the mound for the O’s and did not factor into the decision as he threw 5.1 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Righty Jon Gray will get the ball for the Rangers here and he is coming off a losing effort against the Seattle Mariners where he went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Birds Staying Hot

The Baltimore Orioles have been struggling a bit at the plate this season as they are tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for 23rd in the sport with a .688 team OPS while averaging 4.19 runs per game so far. Shortstop Jorge Mateo has not been hitting great but is making his impact felt as he has a .634 OPS with eight homers and 26 RBI while also stealing 24 bases up to this point. In his last 15 games, he has been hitting very well as he has a .327/.340/.653 slashline with a pair of home runs, four RBI, and three stolen bases over that stretch.

Spenser Watkins has not pitched well at all this season when looking at his Baseball Savant page as he is in the fifth percentile in strikeout percentage. He has been allowing too hard of contact as hitters have a 91.2 MPH average exit velocity so far. Watkins throws five different pitches with four pitches being thrown at least 10.6 percent of the time so far. He faced the Rangers once this season as he won by throwing 6.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Everything’s Bigger in Texas

The Texas Rangers have been hitting decently well as they are sitting at 17th in MLB with a .701 OPS while scoring 4.55 runs per game. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe has been doing pretty well at the dish as he has a .778 OPS with 15 homers and 44 RBI while stealing a base as well. He’s been hitting well in his previous seven games as he is 8-for-28 with a pair of home runs, four RBI, and two runs scored during that stretch.

Jon Gray has been pitching pretty well over the course of the regular season according to his Baseball Savant page as he is in the 77th percentile in strikeout percentage. He is making hitters miss barrels as he has a 6.7 barrel percentage this season. He has a four-pitch arsenal with his fastball being thrown a whopping 49 percent of the time thus far. Gray has not faced the Baltimore Orioles since 2016 so this will be an incredibly different lineup.
